Being a regular user of e-bikes for more than a decade, I have had my share of my electric bike keep cutting out. Believe me, there’s no worse feeling than figuring out why the e-bike keeps cutting out. IF you are in the same boat as me and want to know why this problem arises and how to fix it, you are in luck. I will go over all the main causes of why the electric bike keeps cutting out and give solutions so you can troubleshoot the problem with ease.
Electric bikes keep cutting out due to controller, battery, or motor issues. The most common cause of electric bike cutting out is a faulty controller. This is the brain of your ebike and if it fails, then you’ll be stranded with a useless machine. If your battery or motor dies, then it’s not so critical.
If you’re experiencing this problem, the first thing to do is check the battery. If it’s below 25% charge, then that could be a problem. If it’s above 75%, then you should also check the controller and motor. If your bike keeps cutting out, it might be due to a problem with the controller. If this is the case, then you should clean it and make sure there are no loose connections
Your electric bike is shutting off and turning off completely, especially while pedaling. So, why does my electric bike keep cutting out? It’s very likely due to a controller, battery or motor issue.
Your electric bicycle battery or motor is failing to keep the bike running. In many cases, this is due to an issue with a loose connection within the system. Make sure all connections are tight and in good working order before turning on your bike.
Why Does My Electric Bike Keep Cutting Out? Causes:
Let’s look at what causes the electric bike to cut out. Once we can determine the cause of the problem, we can fix it.
- Disconnected/Loose Throttle
- Disconnected/Loose Prongs
- Motor is disconnected
- Battery is dead
- Problem with the controller
- Pedal Assist is failing
- Sensors are damaged
- Damaged brake levers
Disconnected/Loose Throttle
If your Ebike’s throttle is loose or disconnected, the motor won’t be able to transmit the power. This disruption in power will make the electric bike to keep cutting. In rare cases, having a throttle which isn’t responsive and doesn’t come back to it’s original place after release may also cause disruption in power.
Disconnected/Loose Prongs
As everything is interconnected to the electric bike’s motor, even the slightest disruption could cause the electric bike to keep cutting out. Prongs can get disconnected or become loose if you hit a pothole. This could cause the electric bike to keep cutting continuously. Sometimes, prongs could even have signs of wear due to a lot of use. This could also be a cause.
Motor is disconnected
As mentioned above, everything in the electric bike is interconnected. If there is any problem with any component, the motor will get disconnected and not be able to distribute power. You have to check if the motor is disconnected. A disconnected motor could very well be the reason why the electric bike keeps cutting out.
Battery is dead
Batteries become weak with time. Believe it or not, sometimes the electric bike keeps cutting out due to the simple reason that the battery is dead and not charging. You will notice straightaway if the battery is not charging.
Problem with the controller
The controller is the brain of the electric bike. You should check the controller to see if there is any damage to it. Sometimes, some wires connected to the controller could also get loose. As everything in an electric bike happens with the controller, any problem with it could cause the electric bike to keep cutting.
Pedal Assist is failing
Problems with the magnets of the pedal assist system could cause the pedal assist to fail. This in turn would cause the electric bike to keep cutting out due to problems in power transmission.
Sensors are damaged
Sensors are an integral part of an electric bike. Having them malfunctioning will also cause the electric bike to keep cutting out. This is because the motor cuts out when there is a problem with the sensors. External factors like dirt or humidity could also affect the functionality of the sensors. As a result, the motor fails to pick signals and disconnects, causing the bike to keep cutting out.
Damaged brake levers
Sometimes, problems with brake lever could also affect the electric bike. For safety reasons, the bike motor automatically shuts down if there is a malfunctioning brake lever. This flaw in the brake levers could very well be the reason why the electric bike keeps cutting out.
Why Does My Electric Bike Keep Cutting Out? Solutions:
Now that we know the causes of why does my electric bike keep cutting out, we can easily fix the issue.
Check the wires if they are loose or damaged
The most common cause of electric bike cutting out is damaged wire or loosely connected wire. Therefore, the obvious solution to the problem of the electric bike cutting out is to check all the wires. Check if they are not loose. If the wires are loose, retighten them. In case the wire is damaged or burnt, replace it. This should fix the problem of the electric bike cutting out.
Replace faulty electric bike parts
Sometimes, the bike parts just become worn out and need to be replaced. Components such as throttle, brake levers and sensors should be in good condition for optimal electric bike performance. If you find that these components are damaged, it is better to replace the faulty electric bike parts and buy new ones.
Get a new battery
If you find that your electric bike battery is not holding the charge for a long time or is just dead, it is time to get a new battery. With the passage of time, all batteries degrade and electric bike batteries are no exception. Once you get a new battery, it should fix the problem of the electric bike cutting out continuously.
